Small-format printing guidelines

These are general small-format recommendations. Specifications may vary by product, size, printing process and supplier.

Bleed

Follow the template

Bleed depends on the product and applicable template. Several Texprim templates specify 1/8 in total, or 1/16 in per side. Extend backgrounds and images outside the trim line to the specified boundary.

Safe area

1/8 in

A general 1/8 in inset from the trim line, to confirm for the product and template, for text, logos and other important elements.

Image resolution

300 ppi

At the final printed size, for pixel-based images. This resolution does not apply to vector elements.

Colour

CMYK

For four-colour process printing. Confirm the profile and any specific settings for your project.

Small black text

C0 · M0 · Y0 · K100

Use black ink only for small black text. Large solid black areas may need different settings.

Recommended file

PDF

A high-quality PDF with embedded fonts. Check the exported file before sending it.

Your product’s approved template takes precedence.

The applicable template’s dimensions and instructions take precedence, including bleed. Keep the file dimensions; do not automatically impose 1/8 in bleed per side. Confirm compatibility with the current supplier. Large-format printing may have different requirements.

What to check before sending your file

Finished size and bleed: what is the difference?

The finished size is the size after trimming. Bleed extends backgrounds beyond the trim line, while the safe area keeps important elements inset inside it. Bleed and the safe area therefore serve different purposes.

Are my images sharp enough?

Check their resolution at the size they will be printed. Enlarging a small image does not add detail. The 300 ppi recommendation applies to small-format images, not vector elements. For large-format printing, confirm the appropriate scale and resolution.

How should I prepare colours and black text?

Use CMYK settings for four-colour process printing. For small black text, the general recommendation is C0/M0/Y0/K100. Do not automatically apply this to large solid black areas or another printing process; confirm any specific settings with Texprim.

How should I check fonts and the PDF?

Use a high-quality PDF with embedded fonts to preserve the appearance of your text. Keep a copy of your editable artwork. The print version should contain only the elements to be printed, without unwanted working guides or hidden elements. Open the exported PDF to check the result.

What should I check for double-sided printing, pages and folding?

Check the page order and intended reading orientation on the front and back. For a folded piece, confirm the open size, closed size and panel layout before completing the artwork. The applicable template helps clarify these details; confirm that it matches the current model.

Can I use these values for large-format printing?

Large-format printing may have different margin, scale and resolution requirements. Ask for guidance for the selected material and model, particularly for a retractable stand. The approved product template should take precedence over general recommendations.
